Whenever you think on how new progressive rock should sound, without prejudices nor unnecesary reverences to the past either, you can imagine something like this Dutch band does. Aemen is a quintet that dares to incorporate today's elements such as alternative rock and mix them with a good dose of traditional rock and, if that's not enough, wrap us in a conceptual album. "The Days The Angels Cried" is, of course, a conceptual album narrating the story of a scotish town where a dozen children lost their lives.

Although a conceptual album, each one of the tracks in it can be heard separately. This piece of work is plagued with excellent melodies (strange these days), wrapping atmospheres and even a sitar to round the sound. The sax that opens the song "The Moaning Trees" must be the most emotive intro that I've ever heard in a long, long time: I can't help getting up and head banging a little each time I hear it. The vocals and tubular bells from "The Days The Angels Cried" are exquisite.

Search for this treasure everyone, you: the proghead, you: the alternative one, and you: the traditional rocker....
