Assia is a North African-born artist, who started her career in France. Her music is a mix between her native country & her adoptive country. Assia Maouene was born on November 1, 1973 in Algier, Algeria.

In 1978, her family moved to Créteil, France. During 12 years, she studied the piano at the Conservatoire de Musique. Later, she studied law & got her diploma. In 1993, Assia joined a hip-hop band & she became Passi's backing vocalist. Between 1998 & 1999, she appeared in the crew Secteur Ä. There, her career really started.

Akhenaton & Assia wrote a song in Arabic, "Ghir Dini", for Luc Besson's film "Taxi 2". This collaboration led Assia to sign to BMG Music. However, her first contract gave no release.

In 2000, she signed to Virgin France & recorded her debut album. Assia wrote the lyrics while her brother Khalil composed music. The album Chercheuse D'Or included 13 songs & has been certified gold. The single "Elle Est À Toi" has been a hit, that sold 700,000 copies in France. She also released a duet with Julien Clerc, "Quelques Mots En Ton Nom". In 2002, she joined the cast for Romano Musumarra & Luc Plamondon's musical "Cindy". The latter previously wrote the famous musical "Starmania".

The lead role of "Cindy" has been played by another singer, Lââm. In 2003, Assia appeared in the compilation Première Classe R&B, with "Si C'Était À Refaire". In 2005, she released her second album Encore Et Encore. Diam's wrote a song on it. However, the album has been a failure.
