    Biography

Emmy Award winning composer Bear McCreary was first launched into pop culture with his groundbreaking score to the hit series Battlestar Galactica, that was lauded by Variety as "the most innovative music on TV today." It "fits the action so perfectly, it's almost devastating: a sci-fi score like no other" (NPR). Io9.com ranked McCreary one of the Ten Best Science Fiction Composers of All Time, and recently WIRED Magazine declared him one of only five "Secret Weapons" of the television industry. McCreary was recently voted "Composers' Choice Composer of the Year – Television" by his peers in ASCAP, the first award of its kind.

Bear is currently scoring ABC's hit series Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., collaborating with the visionary Joss Whedon on Marvel's first foray into network television, as well as AMC's record-shattering global phenomenon The Walking Dead. Bear works with renowned producer David S. Goyer to score Da Vinci's Demons, the epic historical fantasy that broke ratings records for STARZ and earned Bear his first Emmy Award, for Outstanding Main Title Theme Music (his theme is a carefully-constructed palindrome that sounds the same forwards and backwards!). Bear recently teamed up with Goyer again to score DC Comic's adaptation of Constantine for NBC. Bear also scores the hit pirate drama Black Sails, which earned him his third Emmy nomination, for executive producer Michael Bay. Later in 2014, Bear will return to STARZ, collaborating once again with BSG showrunner Ronald D. Moore on his highly-anticipated series adaptation of Diana Gabaldon's best-selling Outlander novels. His upcoming film projects include Everly (starring Salma Hayek) and Angry Video Game Nerd: The Movie, the theatrical adaptation of the independant phenomenon web-series.

Bear's swashbuckling score for Human Target featured the largest orchestra ever assembled in the history of series television, and earned him his first Emmy nomination. Bear has also composed evocative scores for series such as BBC America's Intruders, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Eureka, Caprica, Trauma, The Cape and the groundbreaking videogame / television hybrid Defiance. His feature film work includes the critically-acclaimed Europa Report (2013, starring Sharlto Copley), Knights of Badassdom (2013, starring Peter Dinklage and Steve Zahn) and Disney's worldwide hit Step Up 3D. His videogame credits include Sony's successful SOCOM 4: U.S. NAVY SEALs and CAPCOM's Dark Void.

Bear has conducted orchestral performances of his music throughout North America and Europe, appearing at Fimucité in Tenerife, and the International Film Music Festival in Úbeda, Spain. In July 2014, his music was performed by the L.A. Philharmonic and L.A. Master Choraleat the Hollywood Bowl, conducted by Gustavo Dudamel.

In 2013, Bear founded Sparks & Shadows, a boutique record label specializing in soundtracks. In its first year, the label burst out of the gate with eight albums, including digital and physical packages, and two singles. More releases are under way and will be announced soon.

Attending the prestigious Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California, Bear completed degrees in composition and recording arts. However, his professional training came from film music legend Elmer Bernstein (The Magnificent Seven, To Kill a Mocking Bird). Bear was one of Bernstein's select protégés, and learned the tools of the trade working with and orchestrating for the maestro. Bear spent his childhood immersed in film and television music; he is delighted now to contribute back to the genres that inspired him.
