    Biography

Claude Nougaro was born on September 9, 1929 in Toulouse, France. His father was a baritone opera singer & his mother was a pianist. Claude listened to jazz, Charles Trenet & Édith Piaf. He started as a journalist, then wrote songs for Philippe Clay & Marcel Amont. Then he sang his own songs, his first hit was "Je Suis Sous" in 1963. He worked with Baden Powell, Dave Brubeck & African percussionists to create the "Nougaro" style, between swing & poetry.
Claude released 20 albums (Tu Verras, Ami Chemin, Nougayork, Pacifique), made a lot of tours, keeping his sunny accent. He had sung "Toulouse", a song for his daughter "Cécile, Ma Fille" & "Le Jazz Et La Java", filled with slang & poetry. At 70, he released a book, "Sur Paroles", including all his lyrics & personal drawings. He described himself as an "anti-Trenet". In September 1999, to celebrate 45 years of career, Claude became a honour member at Blagnac, near Toulouse. He died at 74 on March 5, 2004 in Paris.
