Meredith Willson was born at 314 South Pennsylvania in Mason City, Iowa, on May 18, 1902. His mother, Rosalie, was a piano teacher, and it was a family tradition to gather around the piano every evening to sing favorite songs. Inspired by this upbringing, young Meredith departed Iowa in 1917 to begin a distinguished career as a musician and composer.

In 1919 he arrived at Damrosch Institute (now Juilliard) in New York. After graduation he played flute and piccolo in John Philip Sousa's band from 1921 to 1923 and then joined the New York Philharmonic Orchestra from 1924 to 1929.
In 1930 he got a job in radio in California, where he composed for movies The Great Dictator (1940) and The Little Foxes (1941). His masterpiece "The Music Man", which Willson said was "an Iowan's attempt to pay tribute to his home state", took 7 years of work and premiered on Broadway in 1957. The movie version was released in 1962. His other enduring hit was "The Unsinkable Molly Brown".

Over the years, several of his songs from musicals became popular as singles, perhaps the most surprising was recorded by the Beatles, "Till There Was You".
