My morning ritual starts with at least half an hour of listening to tracks I've downloaded from the blogs. Just about every track has been posted within the last week. I love the music, but find the production just as engaging. What I learn in my morning listening session infuses the work I do every day.

It's hard to believe that the first recording contract I signed was in 1968. Listening was a band from Boston and we were signed to Vanguard Records. We were Vanguard's biggest signing at the time, and we got an advance of $2500.00. In 1969, I recorded a blues album for the Spivey Records label. It featured my mentors, including Otis Spann. This was recorded at Nola Penthouse Studios in Midtown Manhattan. It was recorded on a ONE TRACK tape machine. Needless to say, it wasn't released in Stereo.

My studio has tons of vintage gear: A Gibson Amp from 1948, several 1950's guitars, a 1960's Hammond Organ, a 1979 Vintage Neve recording console. It also has a state of the art Pro Tools system with Apogee converters. We have tons of virtual instruments, we manipulate sounds in 100 different ways, and find a new way or two every day.

My past informs my work. The present infuses it.

Here's what I liked this morning:
Flight of the Conchords - Ladies of the World
    Howlin Rain - Nomads
Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings - 100 Days, 100 Nights
Phoebe Killdeer and The Short Straws - Let Me
Tullycraft - The Punks Are Writing Love Songs
    Yeasayer - Sunrise

But I still get chills when I hear John Lee Hooker's voice, or James Brown, or Dylan, or Lou.

Put this all together and I feel that I can offer something that is unique. What I bring to Record Production is all of the above and more. It's informed by the past and it strives to look toward the future.

I invite you to check us out for the music.
