I imagine 8, but I don't know anything about music, except how to listen to it.

Hi All - Sorry to upset the applecart but the question could have multiple answers. Firstly the Q says how many are "in" an octave.... if it said how many "make up" an octave that would give more than two answers - the obvious one - 8, but if sharps and flats - 13 for WESTERN music, however I think Eastern music has semi-chromatics. Now, taking the question in a grammatic context using "in", the answer would be 6 or 11 for Western!!! Work that lot out. Have a GREAT day.

Not really, but considering the "okto" it's eight.

...who cares about the context, as long as you know what the prefix means you're fine.

Anything in the world with names starting with "octo" has 8 of something.
I bet octave has at least 2 times more notes than 8

hmmm... an octopus has 8 legs, an octagon has 8 sides and octomom had 8 babies -- so I'll go with 12.

I would've thought the clue was in the name, but I wouldn't bet my life on it.
