The band School Of Rock was derived from Richard Linklater's movie "School of Rock". It stars Jack Black who plays Dewey Finn, a rock star wannabe who was kicked out of his old band for not taking their band seriously, since they are going to compete for the Battle of the Bands. After he got kicked out, he started looking for new members to form his own band to compete for the battle of the bands as well. Desperate to find a job to pay his share of the rent (because he dependently lives with his friend), he deliberately accepts a job offer as a substitute teacher, which was supposedly for his unemployed friend. In his days as a substitute teacher, he finds out that the class he's handling is filled with talented students, who are capable enough of becoming members of a rock band. They named the band "School of Rock", soon started practicing and before long, they were competing for the battle of the bands.
The members of the band all got together preceded by the auditions held by the casting directors. Jack Black was probably already hired for the role of Dewey Finn. Casting directors figured out they should cast children who are by now music prodigies.
11-year-old Rebecca Brown, a classical guitarist who plays Katie the bass player in the movie, and 12-year-old Robert Tsai, a classical pianist who plays Lawrence the keyboarder in the movie, were among 2 of the members who were found through the Public Radio International Program "From the Top".
Meanwhile, 12-year-old Joey Gaydos Jr., the lead guitarist who plays Zack, was found through DayJams, a summer program for kids between the ages 9-15 to learn how to play different instruments like, guitar, bass, drums, keyboards and vocals. Joey is from Belleville, Michigan and has been playing the guitar since he was 8.
Kevin Alexander Clark, known for his talent in playing the drums, is a resident of Highland Park, Illinois. He was discovered at an open casting call in Chicago and in the movie, he plays Freddy Jones, the rebellious drummer. Kevin has been playing his drums since the age of 3 and started taking lessons in 5th grade. His performance often leads to standing ovations.
The lead back-up singer, whose voice is just like Aretha Franklin's, is 10-year-old Maryam Hassan. She signed up for auditions when she found out that there would be an open call in New York through the Internet.
All the members were very hard working and patient when it came to rehearsals. Their songs, apparently, focuses on rock music. One of the songs they performed, School of Rock, was originally written by Mike White and Sammy James Jr. Their other song, It's A Long Way To The Top, was originally written by Ronald Belford Scott, Angus Young, & Malcolm Young.
Their diligence to their work really paid off after gaining popularity by acquiring nominations in different events. The band was nominated for best onscreen team in the MTV Movie Awards.
School of Rock may have just a few promoted songs, but their band is consisted of proficient and gifted actors and musicians.
