Starky formed in 1998, as four young boys who dreamed of changing the face of pop music. Consisting of frontman and guitarist Beau Cassidy, bassist and singer Nick Neal, guitarist and screamer David Simons, and Brendan Clift on drums, Starky released their first single 'Rock'n'roll is the Devil's Music' in 1999.

The record was met with massive amounts of praise and gained the band not only a great deal of attention, but also a $50,000 video clip grant from Channel V via their best new talent award.

In 2003 the band unleashed their debut album Mirror, Signal, Manoeuvre, which did not disappoint the band's expanding local audience, and became a massive success internationally. Starky toured extensively around Australia, the USA and Japan to support the album's release.

In 2005 the band headed to the Welsh countryside to meet up with producer Dave Eringa to record their self-titled second LP.

Having lost guitarist David Simons (Saul Foster had also taken over drumming duties) prior to recording, Cassidy had taken on double guitar duties. Once returning home the band realised that in order to recreate their recorded sound in a live environment they would need to replace Simons. Long-time friend Jonny Wilson was undeniably the most suitable candidate, and slipped into the opening as if it had always been his.
