AboutFormed in February 2001, Phil Ziedler (Vocals), Matt Brock (Guitars), Phil Bulleyment (Keys), Ryan McNulty (Bass) and Phil Styles (Drums) all met in Manchester with one intention... to start a band together. They stumbled across the name of the band one night, at a gig in 2002, when Oxford indies Goldrush decided to dedicate their debut release, 'Pioneers' to the Manchester newbies and the band was officially christened.
In the early days their sound was, as they confess: 'confused electronica.' Says Matt of this era: "There are some pretty nasty recordings we ain't never letting see the light of day again." However, after a lot of hard work, the style evolved into the rich, intricate and distinctive Pioneers sound of today. A heroic, yet gentle alternative guitar based style layered with quirky synths and dynamic vocals. An epic soundscape, full of textural layering and a strong song-based foundation full of catchy hook-lines.
Citing a collective eclectic mix of influences which include, The Smiths, U2, Neil Young, DJ Shadow, Elbow and The Pixies, the band themselves describe their music as 'Indie Alternative with keyboards,' and although you can spot some of their influences at times within their songs, their overall sound is fresh and original.
Pioneers are now on the brink of a real break through into the Manchester music scene, championed by the local press, with a continuous stream great reviews and an ever growing loyal following. This really is only the tip of the iceberg for a band destined for great things. Even at this early stage in their career, the track "Something New" has been included in the soundtrack of two recent films. Additionally, the boys are favourites of Manchester-based 3rdKind Net Radio and GMR's Terry Christian. It's clear to see that the group's star is rapidly rising.
