With a comb down here, it's easy
But do you rather have a good day?
But a dream like this gets wasted
That you'll ... bend under pressure
Still you'll ... bend over pressure
I really love it, oh, you love it
Not gonna loose you, when it all breaks down
And the runaways standing in the wind and pray
And they stare straight into nothing,
But we're all kinda the same. You all raise
On a promise, found out over time
Bet it will come around, get a new way
Or watches how it all breaks down here
Under the pressure
Never break out there
The storm and the wind will go
However you count down there
Stay, keep holding on!
In a cold wind, all arrested
Now, you know how it feels
This is really, warden in my back
Goose all in my gut, this is real
Standing in the water, just trying not to crack
Under pressure
But do you rather have a good day?
But a dream like this gets wasted
That you'll ... bend under pressure
Still you'll ... bend over pressure
I really love it, oh, you love it
Not gonna loose you, when it all breaks down
And the runaways standing in the wind and pray
And they stare straight into nothing,
But we're all kinda the same. You all raise
On a promise, found out over time
Bet it will come around, get a new way
Or watches how it all breaks down here
Under the pressure
Never break out there
The storm and the wind will go
However you count down there
Stay, keep holding on!
In a cold wind, all arrested
Now, you know how it feels
This is really, warden in my back
Goose all in my gut, this is real
Standing in the water, just trying not to crack
Under pressure

AboutThis nearly nine minute opening track serves as a fitting opener to The War On Drugs' third album. Frontman Adam Granduciel explained a little about the process that went into its songwriting in an interview:
"I've gotten much more disciplined. With Slave Ambient, I was writing things on top of loops. Now I really get the structure of the song down, but I leave room for improvisation in the studio. My whole process now is more about chopping than it is cutting and pasting. A lot of things happen in the moment, and I try to isolate all those beautiful moments of "hey."
With "Under the Pressure," I just found two chords I liked, and built it up, did like a ten-minute drum pattern. With others, it might start with piano, flesh it out, add a little drum machine so I can have a beat to work with. Then I improvise lyrics, things I could never write looking at a blank page, things that surprise me.
