Armed with a new team of believers and a brand new record label, U.P.O. is exploding back on the rock scene with their second album, THE HEAVY, slated for release March 30, 2004 on Nitrus Records.
Based in Los Angeles, this aggressive, melodic, hard rock band was formed in 1998 by vocalist Shawn Albro and long time friend, guitarist Chris Weber. After crafting a 4-song demo which attracted major label interest, and only a few short months of self-promoted shows, the band found themselves very much on the industry radar. The group was signed to Epic Records and released their debut album No Pleasantries in 2000.
No Pleasantries -- produced by Rick Parashar, (Pearl Jam, Temple of the Dog, Blind Melon, Nickelback, Default)--spawned two Top 40 Mainstream Rock hits. "Godless" climbed to #5 on the Billboard chart and "Feel Alive" reached #25. "It's funny, you know," reflects Albro. "I grew up listening to radio. Sometimes that's all you have in life as a kid, your dreams and the radio. People were going out and buying the record [based] purely on what they were hearing on the radio! And that, to us, was fucking awesome! That's why we tried to do every radio show and interview our time would allow. Thank God for radio!"
With its heavy, emotional, and inspirational content, the album tapped in to what people were feeling. No Pleasantries sold as quickly as it was printed, all without many of the essential promotional tools such as videos, publicity or a huge hometown fan base. "After selling the first 100,000 records, we couldn't believe it," says Albro, "It really was a testament to the songs. That, and the constant touring."
After extensive touring with many of today's rock heavyweights, (Linkin Park, Slipknot, Nickelback, Godsmack, 3 Doors Down) and building soundtrack, TV, and CD compilation credits (Blair Witch 2: Book of Shadows, "Nash Bridges," MTV2 Return of Rock, Tattoo The Earth Live CD, ECW Anarchy Rocks!, ESPN Under The Helmet), U.P.O. took a hiatus. "We're a rock group, plain and simple" says Albro, "In most every classic sense, complete with all the fixings, if you get my meaning."
The time off hasn't gone to waste. It has only made the band stronger. "We've been blessed with the chance to make records and to play them live for people that feel the same way. How fucking cool is that?" says Albro.
With songs like 'The Fall' 'Lies' 'Go' 'Walk on Water' and 'Murder At The Movies' THE HEAVY - Also produced by the now fabled Rick Parashar - Brandishes a whole new set of sure-to-be rock classics.
