AboutAleksander Sasha Mežek was born in Žirovnica, Slovenia (then called Yugoslavia) in November of 1948. He grew up in the alpine corner of Slovenia where he breathed the natural beauty of the country and its rich culture. His love for music brought him to Great Britain early on, where he found friends and fans. They embraced Aleksander, with his mixture of Slavic heart and western culture. In the early 1970s, he moved to Great Britain to pursue a career in music.
The path to success was not easy, but he developed a reputation of great personal character, as well as being a talented singer and songwriter. His musical talents allowed him to build bridges between the two countries that are in his heart - Slovenia and the United Kingdom...one that gave him life and the one he accepted as a friend.
Aleksander began his career by recording under the stage name "Aleksander John" but after a few albums, he began to use his Christian name of Aleksander Mežek.
Early in his career, he met Sir Cliff Richard, who has become a lifelong friend. Sir Cliff helped Aleksander by producing several songs for his first album, "Days Go By." Sir Cliff and Aleksander have sung duets together and performed on stage several times together throughout the years...particularly in connection with Aleksander's most well-known album, "Podajenu Srcu / Presented To The Heart" which is a bilingual album (Slovene and English) and which was re-released in 2011 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Republic of Slovenia's freedom as a nation.
Another important song in Aleksander's career is "Siva Pot" which is the Slovene version of John Denver's song, "Take Me Home, Country Roads." Aleksander personally wrote the Slovene lyrics and it is said that the late John Denver was very happy with Aleksander's rendition of his song.
Aleksander has recorded nearly thirty albums in his career and is still going strong. He has travelled the world with his beautiful music. And he has fans from countries all over the world, in all languages.
