Born Ashlee Nicolle Simpson in Waco, Texas, US, she has always loved music. At age 11, she was the youngest person ever admitted into the School of American Ballet. And she might be the younger sister of celebrity and fellow singer-songwriter/actress turned fashion mogul Jessica Simpson, but don't confuse their tastes or style when it comes to music.
At 14, she moved with her parents and older sister to Los Angeles and spent time dancing as a backup dancer in Jessica's music videos and tours. Appearances in TV commercials as well as on TV like Malcolm in the Middle and The View led to a regular role on the television show Seventh Heaven but Ashlee's heart was set on a music career. One of her songs, Just Let Me Cry, landed on the Freaky Fridaysoundtrack in 2003, and Ashlee continued work on her rocking and punky demos when Seventh Heaven wasn't in production.
After signing with Geffen Records, she released her debut album, Autobiography in 2004 while during this time, MTV debuted her very own reality show simply titled: The Ashlee Simpson Show which chronologically showcased Ashlee in her music element, working to establish herself as a solo artist - away from the shadows of her big sister. During the records' first week of release, Autobiography climbed to #1 on the Billboard album charts with sales of 398,000 copies. But her quick rise to fame was ultimately sabotaged, potentially "ruined" in a matter of minutes due to her live caught lip synching performance on SNL in September that year.
To regain her massively successful debut, Ashlee came out with her second album, I Am Me, released in October 2005 and produced by John Shanks whom she previously worked with a year or two prior for her last album. It made it to #1 just like her previous studio effort but the album unfortunately didn't gain as much attention.
After touring to support "I Am Me", Simpson appeared in Broadway as Roxie Hart in the London production of Chicago. In April 2008, she announced her engagement to her then fiancé, Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz. That same month, Simpson released her third album, Bittersweet World, which featured the singles: Outta My Head (Ay Ya Ya) and Little Miss Obsessive. Shortly after, both Simpson and Wentz tied the knot on May 17, 2008 (subsequently she changed her name to Ashlee Simpson-Wentz), welcomed a baby boy named Bronx that same year. But after three years of marriage, they filed for divorce/was finalised in mid November 2011.
Simpson has since remarried in 2014 to Evan Ross, son of Diana Ross and added 'Ross' to her professional name. They welcomed their first child, a girl named Jagger-Snow in 2015. Ashlee also made an 'attempted' comeback appearance in 2018 with her hubby on the short-lived reality TV show titled, Evan + Ashlee. The show was intended to promote the jointed music collaboration of the married couple that released on the ASHLEE + EVAN EP. However the show received mixed to negative reviews and was cancelled after six episodes.
Currently Ashlee has settled into her life as a mother, taking break from music and raising her children and welcomed her second child with Ross, a boy named Ziggy-Blu in late 2020.
