Biography

CMX (Cloaca Maxima) was founded in 1985 in Tornio, Finland. At that time, no such things as networks or Music Television did exist there. They started as an English language hardcore punk band with A.W. (Aki Ville) Yrjänä on vocals and bass, Kimmo Suomalainen on the guitar and Pekka Kanniainen on the drums. Their first label is Bad Vugum, known for its punk and HC bands. Already on their first EP Johannes Kastaja (John the Baptist), half of the songs are in Finnish. Their next EP, Raivo (The rage) is completely in Finnish and was originally intended as a whole album, their first one, but they don't quite have enough budget for that. Their debut album, Kolmikärki (Trident) is a strange mixture of waltz, ultra fast HC and ritual music. Kolmikärki is hardly at all played on the radio, and with such an album, CMX thinks they'd get rid of their fans, but manage to do quite the opposite.
In the spring of 1990, they get another guitarist, Pasi Isometsä. They play five gigs for full halls and there's full chaos. However, in the autumn they find out that neither Suomalainen nor Isometsä want to move to Helsinki, unlike the rest of the band. So, CMX had to find new guitarists and they do, Janne Halmkrona, an old friend of the whole group and Timo Rasio who moved to Helsinki simultaneously with Kanniainen. Before Rasio joins the band, they release an EP called Tanssitauti (The chorea). The EP continues the expedition of shamanistic music and punk. It begins with a 22 second untitled Slavic rally, which is named "Matti" by the audience and is a gig favourite ever since. Rasio is panicking with chain saw music, having previously played mostly bass. This, alongside with group getting tired of years of hysteric music, results in their next album, Veljeskunta (The brotherhood) being much more tranquil than the previous ones. After Veljeskunta, CMX tries to release an EP called Musiikin ystävälliset kasvot (The friendly face of music) with four songs, but only end up with a single (with two songs). The rest of two are disliked by Bad Vugum as too slow and tranquil. In the spring of 1992, CMX tour in Denmark, Germany, Austria and Italy with the Canadian NoMeansNo and Radiopuhelimet (The walkie-talkies) from the city of Oulu. As they get back, they find a message on their telephone answering machine. They are suggested to transfer from Bad Vugum to EMI. It's no easy choice, as we're talking about a multinational, big company. They consider for three months and, finally, agree. This is mostly because of the new genre...

In 2017, CMX consists of Yrjänä (vocals, bass), Halmkrona (guitar), Rasio (guitar) and Olli-Matti Wahlström (drums)... CMX eventually moved to a bit more conventional style of rock, even though their music could be described as somewhat experimental (at least when compared to the other Finnish mainstream rock groups). Known for Yrjänä's folklore-esque lyrics, riped with references to religion, mythology, cultural anthropology, philosophy and arts; themes of CMX's songs are ranging from neoliberalism (concept they vigorously oppose), love, leap of faith, life and death to, as of late, futuristic imagery.
