AboutGitta Walther, the daughter of a baker, began her singing career at age 14. She was already singing with Big Bands in her native town of Annaberg, in East Germany (DDR) when she was pulled out of dance halls because she was too young to be in those places. At age 16 she was fed up that she couldn't sing as much as she wanted to so she went to West Germany, with the mandatory promise to return to the communist country, East Germany. With her obligatory family sponsor in West Germany, a cousin who owned a butcher shop just outside of Stuttgart, Gitta said she was awful at cutting and arranging luncheon meat in the store window. She left that job in a hurry, began singing and never looked back.
Before marrying Scottish Blues singer and "Love Generation [DE]" member Don Adams (whose real surname was MacKay,) Gitta Walther had been together for about 10 years with gypsy violinist Nipso Brantner. She and Don Adams were divorced in the mid 1970's.
Don passed away about 15 years later in his native country of Scotland.
Gitta was known as Gitta MacKay, and Simone when she recorded singles in the '60's. She is a member of Die Cornely Singers and Love Generation. She formed the female group The Hornettes in 1980. They released many singles throughout the '80's.
Because Gitta failed to return to East Germany, she was officially a defector, and was not allowed to return to East Germany until the 1980's. Her mother was not permitted to visit her in West Germany until she had turned 60. Gitta now lives in her old home town in the former East Germany in the house she inherited from her mother.
For the past 20 years, Gitta has been living with Jorg, also from Gitta's homeland, the former East Germany. (Introduction by Lucy Neale.)
Gitta Walther was also known as Jackie Robinson. She also sang on the first Silver Convention album and did the scream on Penny McLean's single "Lady Bump."
On October 10, 2014, Gitta Walther passed away at age 74.
