AboutJay Brannan was born 1982 in Texas in a middle-class family and grew up as the son of a petroleum engineer and a teacher. He has described his family as conservative Baptists. Brannan went to college for one semester in Cincinnati, Ohio. After deciding it wasn't for him, he traveled to Palm Springs California, and later to Los Angeles, to start up an acting career. In 2002, he was shown a casting notice and, after the end of a relationship, moved to New York City and submitted an audition tape.

Brannan was cast in 2003 for the movie Shortbus, and worked as a proofreader and in other jobs to support himself. He contributed the song "Soda Shop" to the film's soundtrack, which he stated was his "first professionally recorded track". The song was also released on Team Love Records. Brannan began to record music videos for YouTube, playing songs and showcasing his talent with the guitar, and built an international fan base without corporate sponsorship, using MySpace and Blogspot. In 2007, he appeared in the movie Holding Trevor as the promiscuous best friend of the protagonist, and released a limited-edition EP with fours songs named Disasterpiece or Unmastered and added two additional songs for a 2008 re-release. His second album, In Living Cover, was released 2009 and reached number ten on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart for the week of July 25, 2009.

In July 2008, Brannan released the album goddamned through his own label, Great Depression Records, and toured that year also. In 2009, he launched an international tour, focusing a lot of time in Europe, where per capita he has a very large fan base.

Brannan describes himself as un-apologetically "cynical, insecure and negative", and is known to be quite the protagonist himself through his "ocd" status updates on Twitter and Facebook, where he generates quite the controversy among his fans with his upbeat to severe melancholy posts. He has drawn the support of celebrities such as comedian/actress Margaret Cho with whom he recorded a song/Youtube video and singer/songwriter Jewel who has supported him via Twitter.

A devout Cranberries fan, Jay draws a lot of inspiration and passion from the band, and released a cover of their song "Zombie", to much praise by his followers as part of his cover album, In Living Cover. The album was composed of seven covers and two original Brannan tracks and

His passion, and love and hate of what he does, drive his success and draw new fans to him daily. His fan base is very ambiguous, which speaks highly of how his music truly touches something within anyone who listens.
