Jessica Simpson cover
Although Jessica Simpson, the older sibling to fellow singer-songwriter, actress and former reality TV personality Ashlee Simpson, has notably dabbled into film, reality TV (and now runs her successful "Jessica Simpson" billion dollar fashion line empire and is a New York Times Best Selling author) - she got her start as a pop vocalist, rising to fame during the late-'90s to mid 00's alongside other teen-pop female stars such as Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and Mandy Moore.

Born Jessica Ann Simpson on July 10, 1980, raised in Dallas, TX where she began performing as a member of her church choir. At age 12, she auditioned for and worked to get a spot on The Mickey Mouse Club (the show which Spears, Aguilera, Justin Timberlake and Ryan Gosling got to star in). Unfortunately Jess was unsuccessful in the last callback rounds.

After failing to land on MMC, while she attended church camp the following summer, Simpson was discovered by the head of a tiny contemporary Christian music label and spent the next three years recording her debut album. However, the label folded before her record could ever be released, although a small pressing was eventually funded by her grandmother. Nevertheless, the then teen became a hit on the Christian Youth Conference circuit, where she shared bills with Kirk Franklin, God's Property, and CeCe Winans.

1997 - 1999:
Seeking to expand her popularity in the secular market, Simpson later signed to Sony and toured in support of the boy band sensation, 98° and began dating their lead singer, Nick Lachey. During this time, teen pop was in full swing, and on November 23 1999 marked the date Jessica released her well-timed debut album, Sweet Kisses. The album enjoyed smash singles with I Wanna Love You Forever and I Think I'm In Love With You. Ashlee, her younger sister, can be seen in the latter music video and was included as one of her backup dancers during the start of Jessica's career.

A second studio effort, Irresistible, appeared in spring 2001. Despite MTV's coverage of the album's title track, Simpson's sophomore effort didn't achieve sales to the extent of her debut, which had reached multi-platinum status.

October 26 - Simpson married Nick Lachey, her longtime boyfriend at the time.

2003 - 2006:
It wasn't till summer of 2003 when Jessica become a bonafide celebrity, thanks to the immediate fame and airing of the hit MTV-produced reality show, "Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica", which documented the lives and series of events involving the then-celebrity couple.

Simpson's third album, a mature effort titled In This Skin, received a July 2003 release that smartly coincided with her hit TV show. The leadoff single, Sweetest Sin, was only a moderate chart hit, but thanks to the rise of Newlyweds, Simpson's teetering career refused to topple. A second single, With You, became a favorite amongst the MTV crowd, and by spring 2004, the album was re-released as In This Skin [Collector's Edition]; featuring Simpson's recorded versions of Take My Breath Away (originally by Berlin) and Angels (originally sung and written by Robbie Williams) as well as additional footage from the first season of "Newlyweds".

2004 marked a busy year for Simpson as she dabbed into both music and acting projects like "Nick & Jessica: Variety Hour", "Nick & Jessica: Christmas Special", released her first Christmas album Rejoyce: The Christmas Album in December, in time for the holiday season. And through to the next year/early 2005, Nick and Jess began taping for the second and third seasons of "Newlyweds" and Jess starring in the "Dukes of Hazard" movie, portraying the role as Daisy Duke.

By the end of "Newlyweds", it was cited that the couple's marriage was on the rocks which eventually led up to Simpson filing for divorce from Lachey in late 2005, amidst the rumors and months of separation beforehand. Their divorce was finalised in 2006.

2006 - 2008:
Jessica worked on her fourth album which was named A Public Affair. The album arrived in summer 2006, featuring influences that ranged from '80s new wave to contemporary country. It went gold, a modest achievement given her platinum-selling past.

She continued with acting projects, resulting in critically lackluster/mediocre movies like "Employee of the Month" (2006), "Blonde Ambition" (2007), "Love Guru" and "Private Valentine: Blonde & Dangerous" (2008).

2008 - 2019:
Simpson reinvented herself and signed with Epic Records for her fifth studio album release, Do You Know in 2008, which parted ways from her known 'pop' sound as this album involved more of a country twang with soulful, bluesy vocals.

In 2010, she released her second Christmas album Happy Christmas. This would be her final album until ten years later. That same year, she started dating former NFL player, Eric Johnson, and became engaged in November 2011.

Around this time, Jessica had returned to TV as she starred in short-lived series like "The Price of Beauty" in 2010 and "Fashion Star" alongside Nicole Richie from 2012 - 2013.

With Eric, Simpson welcomed a girl named Maxwell Drew in 2012, a boy named Ace Knute in 2013. The two eventually tied the know in July 2014. And welcomed their third child, a girl named Birdie Mae in 2019.

February 4 - Jessica Simpson released her autobiography (titled "Open Book") and its audiobook form which included six original songs noted in Open Book (Memoir) [Songs That Inspired "Open Book"]. Both the book and audiobook received massive praise from critics and fans as a great read, citing on its raw emotional content; revealing Jessica's honest and vulnerable point of view through her storytelling in recounting the events to her tremendous career.

Simpson released an audio essay exclusive to Amazon titled, "Take The Lead", which expresses themes of motherhood, self-acceptance - a continuation to the growing success of her "Open Book" autobiography. She is working on an unscripted series to be on Amazon that documents her life in the spotlight.
