AboutSinger-songwriter Josh Kelley couldn't sing the praises of Napster any higher. He admittedly spammed e-mail users and routinely put his songs on Napster to garner attention for his music. And it worked. Kelley accidentally spammed his future A&R (talent) rep Eric Clinger at Hollywood Records. "That's how I got discovered," he has said. "I always produced my own songs. I would make MP3 files and go to the library to hook up to a really fast connection, go to Napster and e-mail random people and say, 'If you like so and so, try Josh Kelley.'"The Augusta, Georgia, native has been tossing (or shall we say "putting") along the idea of becoming a rock stage since his mother purchased a guitar for him at the age of 11. He and his brother Charles formed the group Inside Blue and when Josh was 14, the band cut a five-song CD. It earned the attention of one major label as well as the James Brown. By the time he went to the University of Mississippi, he was torn about his future — he was an art major and a golf star. He admitted that being a musician was "always in the back of my mind. It's always been a love. I never tried to single one thing out." Music was more of a passion and as he became more successful, golf took a back seat. Kelley, who plays 14 instruments, recorded his independent releases on his own. However, when he was readying his major-label debut, "For the Ride Home," produced by John Alagia (who turned the knobs for Dave Matthews Band), he teamed up with Matt Johnson and Tom Freund, veterans of Jeff Buckley and Ben Harper's bands, respectively. "It's crazy. They're on a whole 'nother level."Kelley was scheduled to tour as an opening act for Jewel until she canceled her tour due to the death of her bass player. Kelly had a good attitude about it. "Everything happens for reason." Instead, he took the time to finish the video for his breakthrough hit "Amazing." He admits now that he would like to see Napster-like sharing Web sites stick to independent artists who could use the exposure. "It helped me on this first album because nobody knew about it. It made it easier for people to know about the music. Once you get successful and you get another album, you want to start safeguarding it. , You can't exactly download a Picasso and have it look like the original, but you can download somebody's music and make it look like the original. It's sort of the weird thing. "
