Howard Shore (1946-present)

Howard Shore is a Jewish Canadian film composer who is best known for the music to The Lord of the Rings 2001-2003 movie remake and to The Hobbit 2012-2014 movie remake, Mrs. Doubtfire, and Big. He's also known for the music to the NBC TV show Saturday Night Live. And was a member of the Jazz fusion band "Lighthouse"

(Early Childhood Years)

Howard Shore was born on October 18, 1946 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Howard Shore studied music when he was 8 years old and played different musical instrumentals. When he went to summer camp, he met a friend named Lorne Michaels who would work on NBCs Saturday Night Live TV show and The Tonight Show. Howard played in High School bands and when he was 17 years old he decided to pursue a music career.

(College music years)

After Howard Shore graduated from Forest Hill High School he moved to Boston USA to study music at Berklee College of Music. Then in 1969 Howard Shore joined a Jazz Fusion music group called "Lighthouse" and was part of the Jazz band and played Jazz music from 1969-1972.

(Saturday Night Live years 1975-1980)

After the Lighthouse band broke up He composed music for the TV show "The Hart & Lorne Terrific Hour" which lasted only 2 seasons. Then in 1975 he would meet Lorne Michaels and would compose the theme music to NBCs TV comedy Saturday Night Live from 1975-1980 and would appear in TV sketches. He also suggested the name "The Blues Brothers" to Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi.

(Film composer years 1978-present)

In 1978 Howard Shore composed the music for the Low budget thriller movie I Miss You, Hugs and Kisses (1978). He also made the music score to many other Horror Thriller movies including David Cronenbergs movie The Brood (1979), Scanners (1981), Videodrome (1983), Nothing Lasts Forever (1984), After Hours (1985), Fire with Fire (1986)
Then in 1986 Howard Shore composed music to The Fly (1986) remake following the movie Nadine (1987) and Moving (1988)

In 1988 Howard Shore composed music to Tom Hanks movie "Big" (1988). and also made the music to Dead Ringer (1988) and Naked Lunch (1991).
Then in 1991 he would compose music to the popular horror movie Silencer of the Lambs (1991) starring Jodie Foster in the movie. He was nominated for the Best music award.

In 1993 Howard Shore composed music to Chris Columbus family comedy movie Mrs. Doubtfire (1993) starring Robin Williams and made music for M. Butterfly (1993) and to Philadelphia (1993) with Tom Hanks. In 1994 he composed music to The Client (1994), Ed Wood (1994) directed by Tim Burton which was nominated for best picture, he also composed Nobody's Fool (1994), and comedies including The Truth About Cats & Dogs (1996) and
That Thing You Do! (1996) with Tom Hanks. He composed the music to The Game (1997), Cop Land (1997), Analyze This (1999), Dogma (1999),
High Fidelity (2000), The Cell (2000), The Yards (2000), The Score (2001)

(Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit years)

In 2001 Howard Shore moved to Wellington New Zeland to work with the movie director Peter Jackson on The Lord of the Rings trilogy 2001-2003 remake. He included songs for "The Fellowship of the Ring" 2001 called "Aníron" and "May in be" performed by the singer "Enya" and made the song "In Dreams" Then in 2002 he worked on the music to "The Two Towers" 2002 and included "Gollum's Song" performed by Emilíana Torrini. Then in 2003 he worked on the music to "Return of the King" 2003 with the song "Into the West" performed by Annie Lennox. Which won him all 3 academy awards for best music. His music was also used in EAs Gamecube, Playstation 2, and Xbox "The Lord of the Rings" video games.

He also worked on music to "The Gangs of New York" (2002), and "The Avaitor" (2004) which he was nominated for best music, he also composed music to "A History of Violence" 2005 and "The Departed" 2006 which nominated him for best music. Also in 2005 Howard Shore was going to compose music to Peter Jacksons King Kong (2005) second remake but the film score went to James Newton Howard instead.
He also composed music to the Online video game Soul of the Ultimate Nation (2007)
He composed music to The Last Mimzy (2007), Eastern Promises (2007)
Doubt (2008), The Betrayal (2008), The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010) Edge of Darkness (2010), A Dangerous Method (2011), Hugo (2011), Cosmopolis (2012)

Then in 2012 Howard Shore made a comeback with Peter Jackson in composing the music to The Hobbit 2012-2014 movie remake with songs from "The Unexpected Journey" 2012 including "Song of the Lonely Mountain" which won him an award for best music, He also composed music to "The Desolation of Smaug" 2013 with the song "I see fire", and "The Battle of the Five Armies" with the song "The Last Goodbye" by Billy Boyd. and was nominated 2 times for best music.

Currently Howard Shore is still composing music for movies and performs music in symphony concert halls.
