OverA native of Chattanooga, Tenn., Eric Heatherly grew up listening to Creedence Clearwater Revival, Johnny Cash, Conway Twitty and Roy Orbison, among others. He began writing songs at age 8 and was performing by the time he reached his early teens.
After moving to Nashville, Heatherly made himself a fixture of the local music scene, which led to endorsements with Fender and Takamine guitars, as well as a gig in Shania Twain's band for her appearance on the 1997 CMA Awards Show and her subsequent world tour.
He recorded his 2000 debut album, Swimming in Champagne, with producer Keith Stegall for Mercury Records. The first single, a cover of The Statler Brothers' "Flowers on the Wall," reached the Top 10, but neither of his follow-up singles cracked the Top 30. He parted ways with Mercury Records and signed to DreamWorks but did not release an album for the label. He issued The Lower East Side of Life on his own label, NashVegas Recording Company, in 2005.
