OverMalinda Gayle McCready was born November 30, 1975, in Fort Myers, Florida. She began singing in church at age 3, and began seven years formal opera training at age 9. With the intent of pursuing a professional music career, she graduated early from high school at 16. Following graduation, she worked part-time for her mother's ambulance company while perfecting her vocal skills. While her mother wanted her to attend college, at age 18 Mindy decided to move to Nashville. They made a deal that if she didn't have a record deal in a year, she'd return to Florida and to school.

In Nashville, Mindy began singing demos and after a few months met producer/songwriter Norro Wilson, who got her demo tapes to producer David Malloy. Malloy help Mindy further refine her voice and style, and together they created a demo for record companies. Joe Galante, RLG Chairman for BNA Records heard the tape and met with McCready and Malloy in his office, where he had Mindy sing for him. She was immediately offered a deal, 51 weeks after arriving in Nashville.

Mindy's first CD, Ten Thousand Angels, (produced by Malloy) was released in 1996. It went double platinum, thanks to the hit singles "Guys Do It All The Time," "Maybe He'll Notice Her Now," "A Girl's Gotta Do (What A Girl's Gotta Do)" and "Ten Thousand Angels". This CD landed Mindy opening spots for George Strait, Tim McGraw, and Alan Jackson. Opening for George Strait was a scary experience for young Mindy, who had had very little stage experience up to this point.

The second CD, If I Don't Stay the Night (also produced by Malloy) was released in 1997. While living in Nashville with two of her younger brothers, being both mother figure and role model for them, Mindy realized that the most prevalent thing on the minds of young people was the relationships between the sexes. This, combined with the fan mail she was receiving from young fans, especially females, led her to make two decisions about the second CD. First, she decided to lose the make-up and let everyone see what she really looks like. "What hit me hard from the fan mail is that the self-esteem level of little girls is so low. They're terribly insecure about what they look like and how they feels about themselves. I'm sure it's because of the images they see constantly in the media that they have to compare themselves with." The other thing she did was to record songs that ignored the traditional ideas about what a country song can be about. The first single, "What If I Do?" along with the title track deal with the concept of a female trying to make that crucial decision. "The Other Side Of This Kiss" deals with the uncertainty of never knowing exactly where one stands in a relationship. "Oh Romeo" tells everyone, in no uncertain terms, that Romeo may be worth shedding a few tears over, but is definitely not worth dying for. And "You'll Never Know" is about the idea of getting dumped, but putting on a front of indifference in order to save face.

Two years later, in 1999, I'm Not So Tough was released. Though filled with even more great tunes written by some of country music's most talented songwriters, and performed beautifully by Mindy, this CD almost faded into oblivion before it was even released. Rumor has it that differences of opinion between Mindy and the record label (BNA) were to blame for the lack of promotion. The first single, Matraca Berg-penned "All I Want Is Everything" is a direct match with Mindy's personality, according to the artist herself. "[That] is something I've actually said before. I grabbed the song." Other interesting cuts from the CD include "Two Different Things", which in concert Mindy says can be used, to a certain degree, to describe her break-up with actor Dean Cain, "Lucky Me", a funny, cynical look at a relationship, and the beautiful, powerful ballad "Dream On".

In 2000, BNA records released a greatist hits compilation entitled Super Hits, which contained no new tracks. Not even a remix or a previously released B-side. It is the opinion of this writer that this was a lame attempt to make more money, which they could have been making all along if they had only promoted Mindy's earlier CDs with the energy they deserved.
