Welcome to the universe. Exploding with atmosphere, power and melody, their songs are at once apocalyptic and uplifting, filled with characters who battle with alienation, paranoia and dark obsessions, while envisioning their own escape from this world.

30 Seconds To Mars are a captivating, imaginative new band from Southern California. They co-produced their self-titled Immortal/Virgin album with the legendary Bob Ezrin and newcomer Brian Virtue (Jane's Addiction). They sought out Ezrin because they grew up listening to his groundbreaking work with Pink Floyd, KISS and Alice Cooper and they felt he was the only one who could help them capture the size and scope of what they wanted to accomplish on their debut recording. The band's widescreen sound is adrenalized and nuanced, balancing huge guitars with anthemic vocal lines and organic synthesizers with electronic underpinnings.

According to an interview from Virgin Records, former member Matt Wachter said: "The band's name actually comes from a thesis that the band found online that was written by a former Harvard professor. One of the subsections of the thesis was titled 'thirty seconds to mars' and he goes on to talk about the exponential growth of technology that relates to humans and saying that we are quite literally thirty seconds to mars. What it means to us is, we thought it best described our music, in short."

However, this purported source has not been verified

Even before the album was released, the buzz was so strong Puddle of Mudd took the unusual step of inviting 30 Seconds To Mars to open a six-week tour for them in the spring of 2002, even though they were totally unknown and no one had yet heard their music on the radio. Drawing on influences ranging from masters like Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin and Rush to other important artists such as Brian Eno, U2 and The Cure, 30 Seconds To Mars transcends the chaos of the modern world by allowing listeners to imagine themselves away from it. The band's very name implies the accelerated society we live in, suggesting that an escape may be as close as a few seconds away. Mars hovering above us has always been an iconographic image, not to mention being the God of War. But this is not science fiction. 30 Seconds To Mars' songs are real stories and real moments that examine personal human experience. Lyrically, the songs are filled with metaphors and moments of fantasy that capture the imagination.

Even though Jared Leto is a Hollywood actor, he prefers not to use this position to promote the band; in fact, he refuses to play at venues if they have used his name to promote the band

30 Seconds To Mars retreated to the isolation of Wyoming's big sky country to record the album. The band and Ezrin chose an empty warehouse lot on 15,000 acres, striving for the precise location that would enhance their sound. An intense period of preproduction began, starting with an almost obsessive examination of close to 50 songs. After an initial period of chaos, a fruitful relationship bloomed between the musicians and producer, leading to an artistically rewarding work atmosphere. The expansive frontier helped feed their imagination and their playing. Although the songs had already been written, nothing was left untouched as they massaged them frame-by-frame into distinguished guitar riffs and tones and sculpted every last note and detail to achieve their goal.

While the subjects of their songs are engaged in their own searches, 30 Seconds To Mars are involved in a search of their own to produce something unique in today's world of disposable music--something with depth and substance, a work that is built to last.

As of 2018, the band have released 5 studio albums:

2002 (debut) - 30 Seconds to Mars
2005 - A Beautiful Lie
2009 - This is War
2013 - Love Lust Faith + Dreams
2018 - AMERICA (release date April 6)

CHRONOLOGY

30 Seconds to Mars — 2002
The band's debut self-titled album, produced by Bob Ezrin, was released in 2002 to mixed reviews and achieved sales of just over 100,000[citation needed]. The album produced two singles, Capricorn (A Brand New Name) and Edge of the Earth. The former peaked at #31 on the U.S. Mainstream Rock chart.

A Beautiful Lie — 2005
Their sophomore album, A Beautiful Lie, was released on August 30, 2005. Because the album was leaked five months before its release, the band decided to include two bonus tracks: "Battle of One" (an original song that was also set to be the album's title track when it was first announced) and "Hunter" (a cover of the Björk song). To further promote the album, the band also enclosed "golden tickets" in 12 copies, which granted their owners access to any 30 Seconds to Mars concert free of charge, along with backstage access.

This Is War — 2009
This Is War was released on December 7 in the United Kingdom and December 8th in the United States. This Is War is the first studio album by 30 Seconds To Mars in four years since A Beautiful Lie released in 2005. The album will include the following tracks: "Escape", "Night of the Hunter", "Kings and Queens" , "This Is War" "100 Suns", "Hurricane" , "Closer to the Edge", "Vox Populi", "Search & Destroy", "Alibi", "Stranger in a Strange Land", "L490". The first single from the album was 'Kings and Queens', and it was released on 6th October 2009.

September 2012

Artifact, a documentary about the band's legal battle against the record label EMI and the making of This Is War, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival and won the People's Choice Documentary Award.

Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams -- 2012-2015:

The band spent most of 2012 recording their fourth album, Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams. The album was produced by Jared Leto and Steve Lillywhite. Leto said the album "is more than an evolution, it's a brand new beginning. Creatively, we've gone to an entirely new place, which is exciting, unexpected, and incredibly inspiring."

The album is divided into four segments, each named Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams, with the beginning of each segment declared by a female voice proclaiming the name of the segment before the beginning of a song or at the end of an interlude which introduces the next segment of the album:

LOVE contains "Birth", "Conquistador", and "Up In the Air".
LUST contains "City of Angels", "The Race", and "End of All Days".
FAITH contains "Pyres of Varanasi", "Bright Lights", and "Do or Die".
DREAMS contains "Convergence", "Northern Lights", and "Depuis Le Début".

"Up in the Air" would be the first single from the fourth album. In partnership with NASA, Thirty Seconds to Mars launched the first copy of "Up in the Air" aboard the Dragon spacecraft on SpaceX CRS-2. The mission was launched atop a Falcon 9 rocket on March 1, 2013, sending the first ever commercial copy of music into space. On March 18, 2013, the single premiered from the International Space Station, after a Q&A session with the band and Expedition 35 flight engineer Tom Marshburn, while Annise Parker, mayor of the city of Houston, proclaimed the Thirty Seconds to Mars Day. "Up in the Air" made its radio debut on March 18 and became commercially available for downloading the following day. The song reached number three on the US Alternative Songs chart and experienced success in international markets.

The album Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams was released on May 21, 2013, through Universal in the United States and received generally positive reviews. Upon its release, it peaked at number 6 on the Billboard 200. It reached the top 10 in more than fifteen countries, including the United Kingdom and the United States. The band began their Love, Lust, Faith and Dreams Tour in June, which included festival dates at Rock Werchter, Pinkpop, Rock in Rio, and Rock am Ring.

The second single from the album, "Do or Die", achieved a level of play on modern rock radio, while "City of Angels", the third single, was released to rave reviews from critics and eventually reached number eight on the Alternative Songs chart in the US. At the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, held on August 25, "Up in the Air" won the award for Best Rock Video.

Thirty Seconds to Mars announced on April 25, 2014 that they have parted from Virgin Records after tumultuous years with the label, with Leto telling Billboard, "We're free and clear and excited about the future. It's the most wonderful place to be."

In August 2014, the group embarked on a double-headline tour, dubbed the Carnivores Tour, with American rock band Linkin Park, visiting arenas and stadiums throughout North America. Thirty Seconds to Mars then launched a music festival called Camp Mars. The first edition took place in Malibu, California that same month and included a series of activities in a semi-rustic setting and several DJ sets.

2015–2016:

On November 3, 2015, it was announced that Thirty Seconds to Mars are working on their fifth studio album. In August 2016, the band revealed to have signed to Interscope Records and confirmed that a new album will be released in 2017, however it did not drop until the following April. The band is also launching a major worldwide tour in support of the new album.

2017-2018

Their first single off the upcoming new album AMERICA titled "Walk On Water" spent five weeks at #1 on Billboard's Rock Airplay Chart, 4 weeks at #1 on radio's Mediabase Alternative Chart and is currently on the Top 40 charts. ESPN used "Walk On Water" during college football programming for the 2017 season.

The band spent 2017 on tour as supporting act to Muse but will be headlining their own Monolith tour beginning June 2018.

Logo
The band's phoenix logo. The band's phoenix logo (which the band named "Mithra") bears the phrase "Provehito in Altum", the band's motto. Roughly translated from Latin, this means "Launch forth into the deep"; but a more stylized version would be "Rocket in(to) High(ness)" or "March The Skies". The logo was primarily used for promotion of the band's debut, whereas for A Beautiful Lie, the new Trinity logo was created consisting of three skulls, along with the band's name and motto. For This Is War, the band has adopted the alchemical symbol for air, continuing on the sky/air theme.
