AboutMichael D'Mention was born on July 9, 1975 in Milwaukee, WI. As a child, he showed a natural inclination toward music, but found sports more interesting. During grade school years, his father coached his basketball team while his mother, realizing his abilities in music, urged him to take piano lessons. While continuing to sit on the bench in basketball, Michael's knowledge of music increased through piano lessons. Learning the piano provided an understanding of musical notes and chords that would stay with him for life. Combined with perfect pitch and a natural musical mind, he could do things with music that he could never match in sports. "I remember in my 5th grade music class our teacher played a classical piece in the key of C. When I was a kid, they still used phonographic record players in music class, and I guess the record player motor was running fast, because I insisted the song was in the key of D, despite what it said on the record! 's cover. When she didn't believe me, I went up to the piano and played along in the key of D. I couldn't understand why she couldn't hear it, too. When she told me I had perfect pitch, I didn't really understand that it was a rare thing."
In 1991, after having many unsuccessful years in sports, Michael D'Mention attended a school assembly at his High School in Las Vegas, NV. The players of the team were introduced by assembly co-host Dave Owen. "After he introduced us, he played Eruption by Van Halen on his guitar. He was awesome--I knew I was going to call him to see if he wanted to get together to play some music." Michael called Dave Owen that night, and after playing for a few hours, they started a band called D'Nial. Michael quit the basketball team the next day. At the next school assembly, Michael was playing drums for D'Nial instead of wearing a basketball uniform. "From that point on, I knew music was what I wanted to do. Being in a band was the best thing that ever happened to me, and I credit Dave for helping me to realize that." Today, Dave Owen plays guitar with Michael on the D'Mention solo project.
