Here's another 7" from Mexico's premier death metal maniacs of the past, Shub-Niggurath. This one was released by an obscure label called Erosionable Records; but despite the presumably low recording budget given for this EP, the production is actually much better than on their Distorted Harmony effort. The main difference here is that this actually sounds like it was recorded in a studio, rather than a moldy rehearsal room behind a bar somewhere in Mexico City. The bass is downtuned to the point of agony, and it sounds extremely clear on this 7". The same can be said about the drums, especially the double bass which can be easily heard from beginning to end. The guitars have improved in volume, but sadly they are still partially drowned out by the vocals and drums. Speaking of the vocals, they haven't changed too much (other than slightly more reverb), but this time the singer experiments with more raspy screaming along with the trademark growls already displayed on the demo and other 7".

The music on this EP sounds a bit more complex from the previous material. There's a lot more time changes, a wider array of riffs and more technical drumming (he loves his double bass). The lead guitarist has also improved, but not by much. This time around, instead of copying Jeff Hanneman he tries to sound more like Trey Azagthoth with the solos. While still not original, they are vastly more chaotic and give off a much darker feel than the simpler thrash melodies used on the "Blasphemies..." release. The beginning of "Abominations of Ancient Gods" features a sinister bass solo that will melt your brain and drain the remains deep into the steaming chasms of Hades. The NYDM influence hasn't left the band, and Suffocation in particular seemed to have really inspired these guys on this EP. The blasting is much more streamlined this time, and is similar in style to the techniques used by Mike Smith "Effigy of the Forgotten" (although not quite as good).

What's disappointing about this vinyl is that side B sounds worse in quality than the first side. The cymbals become very noisy on "Demon's Conjuration", taking their toll on the blastbeat sections which actually sound quite weak now. Luckily, there's not as much blasting on this song and the drummer utilizes more traditional techniques like fast thrash beats and simple double bass.

In the end, this is better than their demo and the "Blasphemies of Netherworld" EP but not quite as good as "Evilness and Darkness Prevails". I would still recommend this to anyone wanting to further explore the Mexican death metal underground.
