Biography

Evangelist Jessie Mae Renfro Sapp was born to Nesiah and Jessie Hayes, in 1921 in Waxahachie, Texas and went to be with the Lord in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. She organized her first group "City Wide Ocapella Choir" and traveled throughout the state of Texas. Loving Music, She continued her music career appearing in places such as: "The Apollo Theater," "Park Place," and "Madison Square Garden," all in New York, "The Met Auditorium," in Philadelphia and "The Laurel Gardens" in New Jersey. Yet pursuing her career in music, in 1951 she became a gospel recording artist with Peacock Records of Houston, Texas.

Evangelist Jessie Mae Sapp recorded such hits as: "God is so Wonderful," "You've Got to Move," and many others. Evangelist Sapp was inducted into Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame, July 28, 1989. Evangelist Sapp was married to Rev. J.R. Sapp, January 1952 in Fort Smith, Arkansas. After moving to Oklahoma City, Rev. Sapp pastored "The Sixth and Laid Church of God in Christ," where she was the minister of music organizing choirs and groups. Evangelist Jessie Mae Renfro Sapp was one of the last traditional Gospel Singers to pass in this century.

Jessie Mae Renfro Sapp performed professionally for over 52 years. Born in Waxahachie, Texas, in October, 3, 1921, into a musical family, she was immersed in gospel music – playing and singing from an early age. "Looking for something different," she sang jazz as a teenager in Dallas, but after two years she returned to gospel music. In 1951 she began recording with Peacock Records of Houston, Texas. Her album He's So Wonderful remained on Billboard's gospel charts for almost three years.

Jessie Mae Renfro Sapp was married to Rev. J.R. Sapp, January 1952 in Fort Smith, Arkansas. She died in Oklahoma City.
