"I built a house" Lyrics

Terence

I wanted to build a house, so I did
I laboured for weeks, it was all I could do
and as I was working I kept creating more
and when I was done, I was proud for two

at first I just sat there and looked at it
I built a house and I thought that it was nice
so nice in fact that I wanted to share
so I put up an ad, and posted it twice

it didn't take long for people to show
they looked at my house and admired it
so some of them asked if they could come live with me
and I said yes, I was proud of every bit

now here was this house for people to live in
they all walked around being happy to be there
the news spread fast and more people came
but they never did ask if there're rooms to spare

the house kept filling up though it was full
a lot of those new folks were quiet at first
but when one of them spoke is disdain of this place
the others soon followed, like a dam just burst

they lived in the house that I had built with my heart
and though they still stayed, nothing good could be said
they scratched up the woodwork and dirtied the floor
if once there was life, by now it was dead

the people who lived there first soon started to fight
they still loved the house and stood up for their word
but it's impossible for joy to remain
in a house where only hatred is heard

at last I couldn't stand it, I had enough
I left my house, never to return
as far as I know, both parties still at war
inside my house, will they never learn

I once built a house with my hand and my love
but soon people came and did as people do
they tore it all down but in their hatred forgot
with my hands I built a house, and I built it for you
