AboutThe Go-Go's are an all-female American rock band formed in 1978. They made history as the first, and to date only, all-female band that both wrote their own songs and played their own instruments to top the Billboard album charts. Belinda Carlisle on vocals, Jane Wiedlin guitar and vocals, Margot Olavarria on bass and Elissa Bello on drums made up the group when they first started out. Charlotte Caffey on guitar and keyboard joined the band later that same year and in 1979, Gina Schock replaced Bello on drums. Late in 1980, Olavarria fell ill and was replaced by Kathy Valentine on bass.
The Go-Go's rose to fame during the early 1980s. Their debut album, Beauty and the Beat, is considered one of the "cornerstone albums of (US) new wave"(Allmusic), breaking barriers and paving the way for a host of other new American acts. Rolling Stone magazine ranks this album 413 on their list of the top 500 albums of all time. When the album was released, it steadily climbed the Billboard 200 chart, ultimately reaching number one, where it remained for six consecutive weeks. The LP sold in excess of three million copies and reached triple platinum status, making it one of the most successful debut albums ever. They reached their initial peak during the early 80's and by 1985, they decided to disband. The band got back together in 1990 for a benefit concert and was so well recieved, they decided to play a few more shows that year. They got together again in 1994 to release the two disc retrospective, Return to the Valley of the Go-Go's that included 3 new songs. They have been touring regularly now since 1999. In 2010, they touted that they would be playing a Farewell Tour, but it was cancelled when Wiedlin had to have knee surgery and was out for a year. Since then, have abandoned the idea. In 2011, they celebrated the 30th Anniversary release of the first album, Beauty and the Beat, with the Ladies Gone Wild tour. They have been touring the past few years as a quartet, when Kathy Valentine left the group.
The Go-Go's have sold more than seven million albums worldwide since their formation over 30 years ago.
