About"Boys and Girls in America" is the third studio album by American rock band The Hold Steady, released on October 3, 2006 by Vagrant Records. The album was produced by John Agnello and recorded at Water Music in Hoboken, New Jersey.
The album features a sound that builds upon the band's previous work, incorporating elements of classic rock, punk, and Americana. The band's lyrics, written by lead vocalist Craig Finn, continue to be a focal point of the album with Finn's storytelling ability shining through in tracks such as "Stuck Between Stations", "You Can Make Him Like You", and "Chips Ahoy!"
The album's title comes from a line in Jack Kerouac's novel "On the Road", which also inspired the song "Stuck Between Stations." The album's themes revolve around coming of age, the search for identity and the struggles of youth.
