Review: Two crust-imbued extreme metal bands team up for a split. One is a black metal band with some of the most memorable riffs this side of Inquisition. The other is a Swedeath worshiping up-and-coming death metal group. How do you picture this unfolding? Doubt covers of classic doom bands was the answer, but this is what they decided to try their hands at. The bands decided on a meet-in-the-middle approach, with the covers not being straight up traditional doom, but not opting for full on black and death metal versions of these classic tunes.

Young and in the Way's take on the Candlemass classic "Solitude" is definitely the highlight of the split. The production is massive, and the doom riffs churn like tectonic plates. The vocals are harsh, but much more mellow than what you'd hear on Life Comes to Death and possess a decent amount of range. They do not become completely untethered from their black metal sound - the "earth to earth" part of the song goes full black metal, with a raging storm of tremolo replacing the crushing slabs of doom. The face-melting solo serves as a victory lap, being icing on the cake after already nailing the cover and then some.

Gatecreeper sticks a bit closer to their extreme metal sound, opting for a death/doom sound. This one definitely feels a bit further removed from the original, being dominated by massive doom groves bolstered by strong death metal leanings. The vocals here are not as good as YAITW's, although the echoey death growls are still pretty enjoyable. The production is pretty dope here as well, and the whole thing feels thoroughly badass and cavernous. It comes in, it kicks ass, and slithers off almost as quickly as it broke through the door.

Overall, these crusty American extreme metal bands did a pretty stellar job with their covers of two doom classics. My only complaint is I wish they did a few more songs, but you can't always get what you want - as much as I'd be willing to commit all sorts of crimes to hear Young and in the Way cover Count Raven's "Storm Warning". As excited as I am to hear what Young and in the Way do next (killer live band, by the way) and for Gatecreeper's upcoming debut album to drop, this is a nice tide over.
